Introduction
Would you rather go to a funeral or a party? Would you rather be around people who are mourning or feasting? Of course, we’d rather go to a party or feast. However, Ecclesiastes 7:2 reminds us that “It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting.” Why? “For this is the end of all mankind, and the living will lay it to heart.”
In our fast paced lives, it’s easy to ignore our coming death and the lessons that death teach. For some, the topic of death is taboo, but God wants us to stare at death. He does not want us to ignore the effects of sin or the certainty of death. Genesis 5 is a reminder of the shortness of life, and it helps us shape how we live today. We need to live for what truly matters.
